Central NH Regional Planning Commission recognizes that bicycling and walking play an important role as part of a multi-modal transportation system, and is involved in several efforts pertaining to bicycle and pedestrian transportation...
Bicycle/Pedestrian Inventory for the Central NH Region:
CNHRPC has adapted and used standards for measuring how well streets and roads accommodate pedestrians and bicycles. CNHRPC is compiling an inventory of the level of service for pedestrians and bicycles on the regions roads, sidewalks, and intersections.
The Bicycle Level of Service (BLOS) grades roadways according to how well the accommodate bicycling. A formula is used to grade roadways A to E depending on:
- Number of travel lanes
- Width of outside travel lane
- Existence or width of a paved shoulder or bike lane
- Traffic volume
- Traffic speed
- Percentage of trucks/heavy vehicles
- Pavement condition
The Pedestrian Level of Service (PLOS) grades sidewalks according to how well it accommodates pedestrians. Sidewalks are graded A to F (or no sidewalk) based on:
- Witdth of the outside lane
- Width from outside lane stripe to pavement edge (Shoulder, parking, bike landes)
- Percentage of on street parking
- Width of sidewalk
- Width of landscape buffer
- Distance between trees on buffer (average)
- Average speed of vehicles
- Number of through lanes of traffic
The Pedestrian Accommodation Index evaluates the “friendliness” of intersections to pedestrians. Intersections are graded A to F based on the physical characteristics of the intersection and amenities athat are present. Factors such as the existence and condition of crosswalks, crossing signals, visibility, and vehicular traffic speed and volume are all included in the calculation.
Concord TPAC Bicycling Committee:
The City of Concord has created a subcommittee with the purpose of supporting bicycle efforts and to work towards making Concord a more bicycle friendly city. A CNHRPC staffperson is on the committee and dedicates time to produce maps, data, and expertise into the effort.
State of NH Bicycle Map Updates:
CNHRPC staff was involved in the process of updating the state bicycle route maps. The routes themselves were revised, and additional information was added to the maps. The maps are available online at the NH DOT’s bike/ped page at http://www.nh.gov/dot/nhbikeped/maps.htm
Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan:
CNHRPC created a Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan for the Central NH Region that was completed in 2001. Click here to read the Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan.
Concord Bicycle Master Plan:
CNHRPC has been actively involved in the creation of a Bicycle Master Plan for Concord, NH. Click here to learn more about this project.
