In 1988, approximately 1000 properties in the City of Concord were recorded on individual survey forms to make up the Concord Cultural Resource Survey. The forms described the historical significance of each structure, including previous owners and architectural detail, and included a picture. Buildings from downtown Concord, older residential neighborhoods surrounding the central downtown, and the village center of Penacook were represented in the Survey. These surviving historic structures continue to offer a visual history of the city. In the year 2000, the City of Concord was awarded a Certified Local Government grant to develop a website to bring the survey forms together in an electronic format that would link to the City's website. The project is a collaboration between the City of Concord and the Central New Hampshire Regional Planning Commission. Before this time, the survey forms were only available in hard copy at three locations in the City. Now access is virtually unlimited to both pictures and information. It is hoped that this increased access will lead to a greater awareness of the historic resources in Concord. It is also hoped that increased access will help the information serve as a preservation and planning tool for decision makers as they consider new development. Whether a member of the City Planning Board or a historical buff, this
website serves as a gateway to the City's history. It is a vast collection
of text and pictorial evidence of times past. |
